Holistic Healing: Why Mind, Body, and Spirit Are Key to Trauma Recovery

Trauma affects every part of us—mind, body, and even spirit. Trauma can create physical symptoms, such as headaches, muscle tension, or digestive issues, and it can leave us questioning our sense of purpose and connection. Research shows that trauma is not only held in the mind but also stored in the body. According to Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, trauma can cause the nervous system to get “stuck” in fight-or-flight mode, leading to a host of physical and emotional symptoms (van der Kolk, 2014).

In my practice, I offer a holistic approach to trauma recovery, incorporating traditional trauma therapies and integrative options like Reiki, a form of energy healing. Reiki can help release emotional and physical energy stored in the body, supporting the nervous system’s return to balance. Studies on energy healing have shown its benefits for reducing stress, anxiety, and even physical pain (Richeson et al., 2010).

Clients who engage in holistic therapy often describe feeling more centered, peaceful, and connected. A holistic approach acknowledges that healing is not just about addressing symptoms but also about nurturing our entire being.
